Is Your Pet Receiving Any of These Useless Vaccines? By Dr. Karen Becker

In part one of a two-part interview, Dr. Becker talks with Dr. Ronald Schultz of the Rabies Challenge Fund. Dr. Schultz is a pioneer and expert in the field of veterinary vaccines, and heads up the Department of Pathobiological Sciences at the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Veterinary Medicine.
Dr. Schultz discusses the difference between core and non-core vaccines for cats. He explains why he does recommend the feline leukemia vaccine, but doesn’t recommend the feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) vaccine, the chlamydia vaccine, or the feline bordetella vaccine. He also explains why he feels titering for cats is probably a waste of time and money.
Dr. Becker and Dr. Schultz talk about how the term “titer” and its meaning is confusing to pet owners and veterinarians alike, and why Dr. Schultz prefers to call the process “antibody testing.” He also explains why vaccination/revaccination is no guarantee that an animal is protected against disease
To wrap up part one of his chat with Dr. Becker, Dr. Schultz briefly touches on a few virtually useless vaccines, one of which is still readily available to veterinarians.
